Musicgeekasaurus, thy name be "Major General Music"
Tomorrow the Major General Music wakes himself early to be ready to leave Hope College at 8 a.m. Why? It's conference time AGAIN! This seems to be a way of life for the Major General Music. "Why?" you ask? Let's look at the past semester.
Hope College has been back in session for approximately one month. In that timeframe, the Major General Music has been to the following...
- January 20-21: The Michigan Music Conference (MMC), in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at the DeVos Place and Amyway Grand Plaza Hotel. There the Major General Music and his colleagues mingled with music educators and other musical professionals around the state, scored free music, tried free samples, attended concerts, and found some nifty toys. The Major General Music particularly enjoyed the kinesthetics in choral teaching session, where he recognized Dalcroze Eurhythmics being put to work. In a nutshell, Eurhythmics is a music geek's term which basically has to do with the human body's response to music in the form of movement.
- January 27-28: The Calvin Symposium on Worship, once again in Grand Rapids, Michigan, at Calvin College (archrival to Hope College). The Hope College Chapel Choir was the guest choir for the two morning worship services and joined the Conference Anthem Choir for the closing worship service. We embarrassed the Calvin College Music Department, particularly their choirs. It's believed that the Calvin College Capella that could have provided their services at the Symposium. However, the Hope College Chapel Choir instead was asked to sing. Enough said. Oh, and the members of the Chapel Choir were invited to attend any sessions they chose, so the Major General selected one on gospel music, a Q & A with Eugene Peterson (author of The Message) and moderated by the Hope College Dean of the Chapel, Trygve Johnson, and a session on praise & worship music.
- February 2: "Educational Excellence for All," held at the OAISD, sponsored by the CrossRoads Project at Hope College, West Ottawa Public Schools, and the National Diversity Education Project. The Major General Music will be in attendance with several classmates and his professor, where there will be a keynote address, several morning sessions, lunch, an afternoon session or two, and that's it. More milling about and meeting people is expected.
Who knows if there are more... in any case, the Major General Music is growing weary of getting up early for these seminars.
