The Super Bowl? Or the Stupid Bowl?
With the Super Bowl coming up, the media all over is talking about it. As always, when I signed out of my Hotmail account, I was redirected to MSN's main page. The big "eye-catching" story was how one sports fan can't stand the Super Bowl. He said it robs the "true" fans of what he likes in football-adding all kinds of pageantry, additional media coverage, ridiculous half-time shows, and the like gets in the way of what he likes about football. It makes me think maybe that my tongue-in-cheek nickname the "Stupid Bowl" maybe is getting closer to the truth.
The other half of the story offered a perspective on one woman's opinion on why she loves the Super Bowl even if she doesn't like football. The plethora of Super Bowl parties, incredibly unhealthy snack/party food (let's be honest, that layered dip isn't exactly something the cardiologist would approve), and the amusing commercials are among the things she listed. But one thing she mentioned in particular really made me sad. She wrote about how she happily skipped church on that Sunday with her parents so they could prepare for the festivities.
What have churches become? We skip church services for the Super Bowl and are genuinely happy about it. When Christmas falls on a Sunday, some churches legitimately consider not holding services "so that families can spend Christmas together." I can't imagine NOT going to church if it's Christmas on a Sunday! Christmas has fallen on a Sunday twice since I was born (I was 9 the first time and then 20 the second time); even when I was young, I appreciated being in church on Christmas. I would think that would help re-focus the meaning of the holiday-around Christ.
We cancel services on Christmas Sunday (not my own church, thank goodness). People skip for the Super Bowl parties, and they're giddy about both. How truly sad.

Amen. The majority of my family isn't saved...and when I decided to go to church Christmas morning last year...they were pretty upset with me...It's sad the day the very purpose is supposed to be to bring honor to Christ and to celebrate Him...we avoid the topic of Him altogether...
Makes me sad that the world is so clueless....
