What I learned from doing only homework this weekend

I didn't do fun stuff this weekend. Not for the most part, anyway. I spent my weekend doing homework. Mostly reading. Lots of reading, in a book that I'm still trying to decide how much I agree with or disagree with: Marriage Beyond Black and White.

The authors talk about their plight as members (mother and son) of a biracial family, the unfair treatment they've received because they are biracial, and the son's responses. The impression I had is that he advocates a homogenization of people, advocating the view of "the oneness of humankind," in concert with his belief in the Bahá'í teachings. He rejected Christianity because he saw hypocrisy in the church regarding racism. Which begins to make me wonder...

I Corinthians 12:12-31, it talks about the "One Body, Many Parts." Maybe churches today need to look at verse 25 again, where it states "... there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other" (NIV). If we have "failed" someone like the author, maybe it's time to re-examine our attitudes towards people who are different. Are we giving them a Christ-like attitude?

In other news... piano practice is tough, voice practice is even tougher when you don't have much of a voice left, & writing post-tonal music is also tough. As I've been at Hope, I've learned how much friends help me get through stuff, whether it's Bible Study, going to church together, working together on HW (thanks Steven), playing Nertz, talking online (or in real life), and the list goes on. Thanks, friends.

Random thought: I think Noah Livingston is one of the awesomest people in the music department to talk to about anything.

Another random thought: It's my Xanga one-year anniversary! Yay!...
