Top Ten List-The New Year at Hope College
Last spring, the Major General Music posted the ten most important things he learned at Hope College in looking back on his first year. Here is shown the top ten things he's noticed since returning to his Dutch home.
10. Orientation is a time of madness. As a freshman, the Major General Music knew that it was a crazy time on campus with the zillion activities going on. As an Orientation Assistant, he learned how much crazier it is as a member of the Orientation staff.
9. Being on the Student Congress Cabinet is many much work. Depending how hard-working and ambitious the President and Vice President are, being on the Cabinet can involve a lot of commitment. In addition to his work with Orientation, the Major General Music encountered other duties during this first week that he did not expect.
8. Emergencies are unexpected rude surprises. Having spent all of almost exactly seven days back at Hope after the summer, the Major General Music encountered the first medical emergency he's ever dealt with on campus. The Mighty RA had an unfortunate accident involving a Frisbee, a tree, his head, and an ambulance. Thankfuly he was not seriously injured but the Major General Music was forced to leave a frightened Orientation Group 60 with his bewildered partner, the Studly Swimmer while the Major General Music rode off inside the ambulance.
7. Dancing can cause some joint pain. The Major General Music danced the night away two consecutive days during Orientation, boogying, Cha-Cha Sliding (no rollerskates), Electric Sliding, and rockin' 'n' rollin'. He awoke the third morning with a sore right knee, famous for its pink slash across the top.
6. Ticklishness is relative. Studly Swimmer tested this statement on the Major General Music and the Nice Girl Downstairs with a grassblade in the ear. The Nice Girl Downstairs reacted, as did the Upstairs Ninja, but the Major General Music did not.
5. The Major General Music knows many much people at Hope. The Major General Music first really noted this at the all-campus picnic on the Saturday evening of Orientation and the cookout on the next evening. Among the notable people he greeted were the Flying Flautist, the Music Drama Queen , the Happy Drummer, and the Kind Bible Study Leader, all of whom the Major General Music had not seen since early May.
4. The Kletz is the single best place for meeting with people and running into friends. The Major General Music and the Studly Swimmer met with their Group 60 and in addition to seeing their beloved freshmen, the Major General Music was jumped from behind by the Kind Bible Study Leader and introduced Sweet Freshman Girl to the Kind Bible Study Leader.
3. Chapel Choir robes are cloth person roasters. The Tall Tenor showed the Major General Music the rituals in putting on a Chapel Choir robe, affectionately called Egyptian Crayons. The process involved arraying each member with a white dickie, sticking one's head through the head-hole of the robe, finding the front, snapping back each sleeve, and snapping the sides in place. Once on stage, each Chapel Choir member was nearly baked alive in the choir loft of Dimnent Chapel during the opening Convocation.
2. Air conditioning is a true blessing. The Major General Music and the Kind Roommate have been melting in the heat as they sleep, rendering the pair restless and tired.
1. A quality digital camera is a must-have for any self-respecting college student who enjoys pictures as memories. The Major General Music has already snapped 25 pictures at Hope College in one week. Thank you to the Parental Figures for such a wonderful birthday present!

What about sharing important knowledge learned over the summer with you fellow students? Like straw buzzing!

I had to keep the list to ten, although that is also a very important thing.
